Implications of Eccentric Observations on Binary Black Hole Formation Channels

چکیده

Orbital eccentricity is one of the most robust discriminators for distinguishing between dynamical and isolated formation scenarios binary black hole mergers using gravitational-wave observatories such as LIGO Virgo. Using state-of-the-art cluster models, we show how selection effects impact detectable distribution eccentric from clusters. We that observation (or lack thereof) can significantly constrain fraction systems originate environments, dense star After roughly 150 observations, observing no signals would indicate clusters cannot make up majority merging population in local universe (95% credibility). However, if dominate rate a single system confirmed to be measurably first second transient catalogs, must account at least 14% mergers. The constraints on become tighter number observations grows will constrained within 0.5 dex once 10 holes are observed.

Gravitational Recoil Velocities from Eccentric Binary Black Hole Mergers

The formation and growth of supermassive black holes is a key issue to unveil the secrets of galaxy formation. In particular, the gravitational recoil produced in the merger of unequal mass black hole binaries could have a number of astrophysical implications, such as the ejection of black holes from the host galaxy or globular cluster. We present estimates of the recoil velocity that include t...

Gravitational waves from eccentric intermediate mass binary black hole mergers

Owing to the difficulty of direct observation, mergers of intermediate-mass black hole binaries are relatively less understood compared to stellar-mass binaries; however, the gravitational waves from their last few orbits and ringdown fall in the band of ground-based detectors. Because the typical source is expected to circularize prior to entering LIGO or VIRGO’s range, inspiral searches conce...

Astrophysical Implications of the Binary Black Hole Merger Gw150914

The discovery of the gravitational-wave (GW) source GW150914 with the Advanced LIGO detectors provides the first observational evidence for the existence of binary black hole (BH) systems that inspiral and merge within the age of the universe. Such BH mergers have been predicted in two main types of formation models, involving isolated binaries in galactic fields or dynamical interactions in yo...

Black Hole Binary Dynamics

We discuss a new N-body simulation method for studying black hole binary dynamics. This method avoids previous numerical problems due to large mass ratios and trapped orbits with short periods. A treatment of relativistic effects is included when the associated time-scale becomes small. Preliminary results with up to N = 2.4×10 particles are obtained showing systematic eccentricity growth until...

Binary black hole mergers

www.physicstoday.org After decades of effort, numerical relativists can now simulate the inspiral and merger of two black holes orbiting each other. That computational triumph has come none too soon—physicists are on the verge of detecting gravitational waves for the first time, and at long last they know what to look for. Black holes are strong-field objects whose properties are governed by Ei...
